History

During the Sung Dynasty (960AD-1270AD), acupuncture was frequently used as a beauty therapy for the Empress and the Emperor's concubines to experience everlasting beauty in order that they maintained their desirability within imperial society.

Why FRA?

If the body is not in optimum health, as we age, our skin becomes less supple, appears dull and older. Wrinkles become deeper. Undoubtedly, an unhealthy body is easily reflected in our skin. Appearance does matters and the root of the problem is often deep within the body. As there are many acupuncture points on the whole body, including the face, acupuncture can be used to treat holistically not only to enhance physical health, looking good and therefore, feeling younger are some of the many benefits from treatment with FRA.

What are the benefits?

For younger looking skin, you will take comfort to know that facial rejuvenation acupuncture (FRA) is an effective protocol for sculpting ageing skin, without going under the knife. Compared to plastic surgery, FRA is considered low cost, safe with no side effects or risk of disfigurement. Although it may not change the shape of your nose or mouth, what it can do is help slow down the ageing process as well as reduce 'bags' under the eyes, diminish dark circles and puffiness around the eyes, smooth out fine lines around the mouth or softens deep lines on the forehead. Sagging skin or jowls can be firmed. A study reported in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture (1996), 90% of those treated with facial acupuncture, experience a subtle uplifting and natural lustre in the skin complexion becoming delicate and fair, improvement of the elasticity of facial muscles, levelling of wrinkles. They also felt refreshed and revived upon successful completion with one course of treatment.

How does it work?

How FRA works is based on the theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that by promoting qi, blood will flow more easily. Thereby improving circulation to the skin and promoting a subtle radiance that usually resonates with being in good health. Moreover, whilst the intention is to treat the face, treatment with FRA will also enhance longevity owing to its therapeutic benefits on the whole body. It is recommended that a course of treatment of12 sessions over 6 weeks including a health assessment on the first session will be ideal for lasting effect, followed by a top-up course after 6 months. Disposable fine needles of high standard quality are used in this clinic for the FRA protocol.

Contraindictions

Contraindications to FRA are heart problems, high blood pressure, acute migraine, diabetes mellitus, some pituitary disorders, those who have a problem with bleeding or bruising, during a cold or flu, or an allergic attack or during an acute herpes outbreak. These health concerns should be addressed and treated first before using the FRA protocol.
